Learn how to make the best air fryer baked potato with perfectly crispy skin and a wonderfully fluffy center. This fast method is ideal for quick weeknight meals or freeing up oven space for holiday sides.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium Russet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Scrub the potatoes well under running water. Dry them completely with a paper towel; moisture prevents crispy skin.
  2. Use a fork to pierce each potato deeply 6 to 8 times all over. This allows steam to escape.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, coarse salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using).
  4. Rub the oil mixture evenly over the entire surface of each potato. Make sure the salt adheres well to the skin.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  6. Place the seasoned potatoes in the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they do not touch or overlap too much for best air circulation.
  7. Air fry for 30 to 35 minutes.
  8. At the 20-minute mark, carefully flip the potatoes over.
  9. Check for doneness by inserting a fork or skewer into the center; it should slide in with no resistance. If not done, continue cooking in 3-5 minute increments.
  10. Remove the potatoes from the air fryer. Immediately slice them open lengthwise down the middle. Gently squeeze the sides to fluff the interior.
  11. Add your desired toppings and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Russet potatoes work best for this recipe because their high starch content yields the fluffiest interior.
  • For extra crispy skin, you can lightly brush the potatoes with a little extra oil halfway through the cooking time.
  • This method is the fastest baked potato method available, perfect for weeknight potato recipes.
  • Toppings ideas include: sharp cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon, sour cream, chives, butter, or chili.
