Ingredients
Scale
8 ounces halloumi cheese
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
Cooking spray (oil-based)
Instructions
Cut the halloumi block into sticks approximately 3 inches long and 1/2 inch thick. Pat the sticks very dry with paper towels.
Set up a dredging station with three shallow dishes. In the first dish, mix the flour and pepper. In the second dish, place the beaten egg. In the third dish, place the panko breadcrumbs.
Take one halloumi stick and coat it completely in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
Dip the floured stick into the egg, allowing excess to drip off.
Press the stick firmly into the panko breadcrumbs until fully coated. Repeat for all sticks.
Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (195°C) for 3 minutes.
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the coated halloumi sticks in a single layer in the basket, ensuring they do not touch. You may need to cook in batches.
Spray the tops of the halloumi sticks lightly with cooking spray.
Air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping the sticks halfway through the cooking time. The fries are done when they are golden brown and crispy.
Serve immediately with your preferred dipping sauce.
Notes
For extra crispiness, you can chill the coated halloumi sticks in the freezer for 10 minutes before air frying.
If you need a gluten-free option, substitute the all-purpose flour with rice flour and the panko with gluten-free breadcrumbs.
Sweet chili sauce or honey make excellent dipping accompaniments for these fries.
