Make crispy, golden mini blooming onions in your air fryer. This recipe provides simple steps for achieving a crunchy coating without deep frying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 small white or yellow onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray (oil-based)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions: Peel the onions. Make four deep, vertical cuts from the top almost to the root, stopping about 1/2 inch from the bottom. Do not cut all the way through. Gently press the onion down to encourage the sections to separate slightly. Rinse the cut onions under cold water to help them open up. Pat them completely dry.
  2. Set up the dredging stations: In one shallow dish, mix the flour, salt, pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper. In a second dish, whisk the eggs and milk together. In a third dish, place the panko breadcrumbs.
  3. Coat the onions: Dip each onion first into the flour mixture, shaking off excess. Next, dip it into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Finally, press firmly into the panko breadcrumbs, ensuring the crumbs get into all the crevices.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Spray the air fryer basket lightly with cooking spray. Place the coated onions in the basket in a single layer, ensuring they do not touch. You may need to cook in batches.
  6. Spray the tops of the coated onions generously with cooking spray.
  7. Air fry for 12 to 15 minutes, flipping halfway through. Spray the second side with cooking spray before flipping. The onions are done when they are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove carefully and serve immediately with your preferred dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For best results, use onions that are uniform in size so they cook evenly.
  • Ensure the onions are completely dry after rinsing; moisture prevents the coating from sticking.
  • Use a high-heat cooking spray for the best crisping effect in the air fryer.
