Make delicious, crispy mozzarella sticks in your air fryer for a lighter take on this classic appetizer. Get that satisfying crunch and gooey center without all the deep-fried guilt. This recipe is perfect for your next gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound low-moisture, part-skim mozzarella cheese sticks
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Cooking spray (olive oil or avocado oil recommended)

Instructions

  1. Cut the mozzarella sticks in half if they are very long. Pat them completely dry with paper towels. This step helps the coating stick.
  2. Set up a standard breading station with three shallow dishes.
  3. In the first dish, place the flour.
  4. In the second dish, place the beaten eggs.
  5. In the third dish, mix the panko breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder.
  6. Working with one cheese stick at a time, dredge it completely in the flour, shaking off any excess.
  7. Dip the floured stick into the egg wash, allowing excess to drip off.
  8. Press the stick firmly into the breadcrumb mixture, coating all sides well.
  9. Place the coated sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze them for at least 30 minutes. Freezing prevents them from leaking during cooking.
  10. Preheat your air fryer to 380 degrees F (195 degrees C).
  11. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  12. Arrange the frozen mozzarella sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd.
  13. Lightly spray the tops of the sticks with cooking spray.
  14. Air fry for 6 to 8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  15. Serve immediately with your favorite marinara sauce.

Notes

  • Drying the cheese thoroughly is key for a crispy crust.
  • Freezing the sticks before air frying is a necessary step for the best results.
  • Check your air fryer manual for specific cooking times; yours might cook faster or slower.
  • Use a high-heat cooking spray for an even golden finish.
