Make baked apple chips. Slowly oven-dry thin apple slices with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Get crisp, naturally sweet chips. Enjoy a guilt-free, homemade fall snack. Crunch on these instead of store-bought potato chips or sugary candy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large apples (such as Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°F (95°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Wash and core the apples. You do not need to peel them.
  3. Slice the apples thinly, about 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick. A mandoline slicer works best for uniform slices.
  4. Arrange the apple slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets. Do not overlap them.
  5. Sprinkle the apple slices evenly with cinnamon, if using.
  6. Bake for 1 to 1.5 hours, then flip the apple slices. Continue baking for another 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the chips are dry and crisp. The baking time depends on the thickness of your slices and the water content of the apples.
  7. Turn off the oven and leave the apple chips in the oven to cool completely. This helps them crisp up even further.
  8. Once cool, store the apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

Notes

  • For best results, use firm, crisp apples.
  • A mandoline slicer makes slicing easier and more uniform.
  • Keep an eye on the chips during the last hour of baking to prevent burning.
  • The chips will crisp up more as they cool.
