Make impressive, surprisingly easy buttery dinner rolls. These soft rolls will become the highlight of your next dinner gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 105°F to 115°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted, plus more for brushing
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk and yeast in a large bowl. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Stir in the sugar, egg, melted butter, and salt into the yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Turn to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel.
  6. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  7. Gently punch down the risen dough. Divide it into 12 equal pieces.
  8. Roll each piece into a smooth ball. Arrange the balls close together in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan.
  9. Cover the pan loosely. Let the rolls rise again for 30 to 45 minutes, or until puffy.
  10. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  11. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  12. Immediately brush the tops generously with melted butter while the rolls are still hot.
  13. Serve warm for the best buttery flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure your milk is the correct temperature for the yeast to activate properly.
  • For extra softness, use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour.
  • You can brush the tops with melted butter halfway through baking for an even richer crust.
