Ingredients
All-purpose flour: 2 cups
Granulated sugar (for cake): 1 cup
Baking powder: 2 teaspoons
Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
Unsalted butter, softened: 1/2 cup
Eggs: 2 large
Milk: 3/4 cup
Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon
Brown sugar (for swirl): 1/2 cup
Ground cinnamon (for swirl): 1 tablespoon
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in the softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon for the swirl.
Spread half of the batter into the prepared baking pan.
Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the batter.
Top with the remaining batter, spreading gently.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan before slicing and serving.
Notes
For the best texture, make sure your butter is truly softened, not melted.
Do not overmix the batter after adding the wet ingredients; this keeps your cake tender.
You can add a simple glaze of powdered sugar and a splash of milk on top after cooling if you prefer extra sweetness.
