Make a crispy, seasoned fried onion at home, just like Outback’s Bloomin’ Onion, complete with a spicy dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large (about 1 pound) yellow onion
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • Oil for deep frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut oil)
  • For the Dipping Sauce:
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Peel the onion and cut about ½ inch off the top. Leave the root end intact.
  2. Place the onion cut-side down on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, start about ½ inch from the root and make a cut straight down to the board.
  3. Continue making cuts evenly spaced around the onion, creating 12-16 wedges, without cutting through the root.
  4. Gently separate the ‘petals’ of the onion.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together 1 ½ cups of flour, paprika, salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  6. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and milk.
  7. Place the remaining ½ cup of flour in a separate shallow dish.
  8. Dredge the onion in the plain flour, making sure to get between all the petals. Shake off excess.
  9. Dip the floured onion into the egg mixture, ensuring all petals are coated. Let excess drip off.
  10. Transfer the onion to the seasoned flour mixture. Carefully coat every part of the onion, pressing the flour mixture onto the petals.
  11. Heat oil in a large deep pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C). Ensure there is enough oil to submerge the onion.
  12. Carefully place the coated onion into the hot oil, cut-side down.
  13. Fry for 7-10 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy, turning once halfway through if needed to ensure even cooking.
  14. Carefully remove the onion from the oil and place it on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  15. While the onion fries, prepare the dipping sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, salt, and cayenne pepper. Stir until well combined.
  16. Serve the Bloomin’ Onion hot with the dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Use a very sharp knife for cutting the onion to prevent tearing.
  • A blooming onion tool can simplify the cutting process.
  • Make sure the oil is at the correct temperature for best results.
  • You can prepare the dipping sauce ahead of time and chill it.
