Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Cooked rice, for serving
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Sliced green onions, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, salt, and pepper.
  2. Add the chicken pieces to the bowl and toss to coat evenly.
  3. Dip each chicken piece into the beaten egg, then dredge it again in the flour mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  5. Fry the chicken in batches until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes per batch. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels.
  6. In a separate saucepan, combine the orange juice, rice vinegar, soy sauce, honey, grated ginger, minced garlic, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  7. Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Cook for about 5-8 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  8. Return the fried chicken to the skillet with the sauce. Toss to coat the chicken evenly.
  9. Serve the orange chicken immediately over cooked rice.
  10. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions.

Notes

  • For a crispier chicken, you can double-fry it. Fry once until lightly golden, remove, and then fry again until deep golden brown.
  • Adjust the sweetness and tanginess of the sauce by adding more honey or rice vinegar to your preference.
  • Feel free to add steamed broccoli or other vegetables to your bowl for a complete meal.
