Make a classic, creamy rice pudding on the stovetop using simple ingredients. This recipe delivers a comforting, nostalgic dessert flavor with vanilla and cinnamon.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup short-grain white rice
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (plus extra for topping)

Instructions

  1. Combine the rice, milk, sugar, and salt in a heavy-bottomed saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.
  3. Reduce the heat to low once simmering. Continue to cook slowly, stirring often, for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the pudding has thickened to your desired consistency.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the pudding into individual serving bowls.
  6. Sprinkle the top of each serving with a little extra ground cinnamon before serving warm.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute 1/2 cup of the whole milk with heavy cream.
  • If the pudding becomes too thick upon cooling, stir in a splash of milk to reach your preferred texture.
  • You can prepare this dessert ahead of time and reheat it gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
