Ingredients
Scale
1 loaf (1 pound) dry challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
6 large eggs
2 cups eggnog
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Butter for greasing dish
Instructions
Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
Pour the eggnog mixture evenly over the bread cubes.
Press the bread down gently to soak up the liquid.
Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap.
Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Remove the plastic wrap.
Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and set in the center.
Let it cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
Using day-old, slightly stale bread works best for soaking up the custard.
For extra richness, you can add a sprinkle of powdered sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup before serving.
If you prefer a slightly firmer texture, reduce the chilling time.
