Enjoy these rich and sweet Fig Brown Butter Squares. The nutty depth of brown butter pairs perfectly with sweet dried figs for a comforting baked treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup dried figs, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Continue cooking, swirling occasionally, until the butter foams, then brown bits form at the bottom and it smells nutty. Immediately pour the brown butter into a heatproof bowl to stop cooking. Let cool slightly.
  2. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8 inch baking pan, or line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk the cooled brown butter with the granulated sugar and brown sugar until well combined.
  5. Whisk in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Fold in the chopped dried figs and pecans, if using.
  8. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached.
  10. Let the squares cool completely in the pan before lifting out using the parchment overhang and cutting into squares.

Notes

  • Browning butter is key; watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • Use high-quality dried figs for the best flavor.
  • If you prefer a chewier bar, slightly underbake them.
