Make the ultimate crowd-pleasing side dish with this easy, creamy green bean casserole recipe, featuring tender beans and a crispy fried onion topping. It is perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can green beans, drained
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 1.5-quart baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper until smooth.
  3. Add the drained green beans to the soup mixture and stir gently to coat them completely.
  4. Pour the bean mixture into your prepared baking dish.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes.
  6. Remove the dish from the oven and sprinkle 1 cup of the crispy fried onions evenly over the top.
  7. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
  8. Let the casserole stand for 5 minutes before serving. Sprinkle the remaining 1/3 cup of crispy fried onions over the top just before you bring it to the table.

Notes

  • You can prepare this entire casserole, except for the final topping of onions, up to one day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Add 10 minutes to the initial baking time if baking from cold.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute the canned green beans with 1 pound of fresh green beans, trimmed and blanched until tender-crisp.
  • This recipe is a traditional Thanksgiving side dish that always disappears first!
