Enjoy this fun fall dessert recipe for Inside-Out Apple Pie Baked Apples. It’s a delightful way to bake apple pie filling inside whole apples for a perfect autumn treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Caramel sauce for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Wash the apples. Use a melon baller or a small spoon to carefully scoop out the core and seeds from the center of each apple, creating a cavity. Be careful not to scoop through the bottom of the apple.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. Stir in the chopped nuts and dried fruit, if using.
  5. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the flour and lemon juice to form a paste.
  6. Add the flour-lemon juice paste to the butter mixture and stir until well combined.
  7. Spoon the apple pie filling evenly into the cavity of each apple. Pack it in gently.
  8. Place the filled apples in a baking dish.
  9. Pour about 1/4 inch of water into the bottom of the baking dish to help keep the apples moist.
  10. Bake for 30-45 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Baking time will vary depending on the size and variety of apples.
  11. Carefully remove the apples from the oven.
  12. Serve warm, drizzled with caramel sauce if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of ground cloves to the filling.
  • If you don’t have a melon baller, a small paring knife and spoon can be used to create the apple cavity.
  • Ensure the apples are stable in the baking dish. If they wobble, you can trim a tiny bit off the bottom to create a flat surface.
