1 (750 ml) bottle red wine (like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
1 cup orange juice
1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
1 cinnamon stick
3 whole star anise
6 whole cloves
2 strips orange peel
Instructions
Pour the red wine, orange juice, and honey into your slow cooker.
Add the cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves, and orange peel.
Stir gently to combine all ingredients.
Cover the slow cooker and set it to low heat for at least 2 hours, or up to 4 hours, allowing the flavors to meld.
Stir occasionally.
Before serving, remove the whole spices and orange peel.
Ladle the mulled wine into mugs and enjoy.
Notes
For a stronger spice flavor, you can add a few more cloves or a piece of fresh ginger.
If you prefer a sweeter mulled wine, add more honey to taste.
This recipe can be made ahead and kept warm in the slow cooker on the ‘warm’ setting.
