Ingredients
Scale
1 loaf (about 1 lb) thick-cut brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch slices
6 large eggs
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 cup eggnog
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of ground cloves
Butter or cooking spray for greasing
Instructions
Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or spray.
Arrange the bread slices in a single layer in the prepared baking dish, overlapping slightly if needed.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, eggnog, sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves until well combined.
Pour the eggnog mixture evenly over the bread slices, pressing down gently to soak.
Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap.
Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Remove the plastic wrap.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
Let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For an extra special touch, you can dust the finished French toast with powdered sugar before serving.
If the top begins to brown too quickly, loosely cover the dish with foil for the last 10 minutes of baking.
If you do not have eggnog, you can substitute with milk and add an extra tablespoon of sugar and a dash more nutmeg.
