Make spooky Halloween pancakes. These pancakes are perfect for a fun, festive October breakfast. Tint them or shape them into ghosts or jack-o’-lanterns using batter art or chocolate chips. Delight kids and adults alike with this easy recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or vegetable oil
  • Food coloring (orange, green, black)
  • Chocolate chips (for decorating)
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, egg, and melted butter or oil.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are fine.
  4. Divide the batter into separate bowls. Add food coloring to each bowl to create desired Halloween colors (e.g., orange for pumpkins, green for monster faces, a small amount of black for details). Leave some batter plain for ghost shapes.
  5. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or non-stick pan over medium heat.
  6. Pour or spoon batter onto the hot griddle to form desired shapes. For ghost shapes, use plain batter and oval shapes. For jack-o’-lanterns, use orange batter and round shapes.
  7. Use a squeeze bottle or a spoon to draw faces or details with different colored batters. For example, use black batter for eyes and mouths on pumpkins or ghosts. Place chocolate chips for eyes or other features.
  8. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Remove pancakes from the griddle and keep warm.
  10. Serve immediately with maple syrup, whipped cream, and extra chocolate chips for decoration.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the batter; it makes pancakes tough.
  • Adjust food coloring amounts to achieve desired color intensity.
  • Use a squeeze bottle for precise batter art.
  • Keep cooked pancakes warm in a low oven while you cook the rest.
