Make this Sticky Sesame Chicken at home for a quick, irresistible takeout alternative. You get tender chicken pieces coated in a perfectly balanced sweet and savory glaze.

Ingredients

  • Chicken Breast or Thighs: 1.5 lbs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Cornstarch: 1/4 cup
  • Salt: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black Pepper: 1/4 teaspoon
  • Vegetable Oil: 2 tablespoons, for frying
  • Sesame Oil: 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic: 3 cloves, minced
  • Ginger: 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Soy Sauce: 1/4 cup
  • Honey or Maple Syrup: 1/4 cup
  • Rice Vinegar: 2 tablespoons
  • Water: 2 tablespoons
  • Sesame Seeds: 1 tablespoon, toasted, for garnish
  • Green Onions: 2 stalks, sliced, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss the chicken pieces with cornstarch, salt, and pepper until fully coated.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the coated chicken to the skillet in a single layer, working in batches if necessary. Fry for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove chicken and set aside.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium. Add sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger to the skillet. Sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey (or maple syrup), rice vinegar, and water.
  6. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens slightly, about 1-2 minutes.
  7. Return the cooked chicken to the skillet. Toss gently to coat all the pieces completely in the sticky sauce.
  8. Remove from heat. Garnish immediately with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving.

Notes

  • For crispier chicken, you can double-fry the pieces: cook them once until lightly golden, set aside, then fry again briefly right before tossing in the sauce.
  • Adjust the honey or maple syrup to suit your preferred sweetness level.
  • Serve this dish over steamed white or brown rice to soak up the extra sauce.
