Turn taco night into an adventure with this Taco Braid. It takes familiar taco fillings and wraps them in a fun, shareable braided bread. It is simple to make and a big hit with the whole family.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 (8 ounce) package refrigerated crescent roll dough (2 rolls)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (for serving)
  • 1/4 cup salsa (for serving)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Stir in the taco seasoning and water. Simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat.
  4. Unroll both cans of crescent roll dough onto a lightly floured surface. Do not separate the triangles. Press the dough together to form two large rectangles.
  5. Spoon the taco meat mixture over the center third of one dough rectangle, leaving a 1-inch border on the sides. Sprinkle half of the cheese over the meat.
  6. Place the second dough rectangle directly over the filling. Press the edges firmly to seal the top and bottom layers together.
  7. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut 1-inch wide strips diagonally from the long edges toward the center filling, leaving the center section of the dough (where the filling is) uncut. You should have about 8 strips on each side.
  8. Fold the strips alternately over the filling, crossing them over each other to create a braid pattern. Crimp the ends to seal securely.
  9. Carefully transfer the braid to the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the braid is golden brown and cooked through.
  11. Let the braid cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm with sour cream, salsa, and cilantro.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or shredded cooked chicken for the ground beef.
  • Feel free to add other cooked taco fillings like black beans or corn to the meat mixture.
  • If you want a richer color, brush the top of the braid with an egg wash before baking.
