Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (15.25 ounces) chocolate cake mix
  • Ingredients called for on cake mix box (usually eggs, oil, water)
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cake batter according to the directions on the cake mix box.
  2. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9×13 inch baking pan.
  3. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for the time specified on the box instructions, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  4. While the cake bakes, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan, combine the butter, milk, and cocoa powder. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat immediately.
  5. Stir in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.
  6. Stir in the chopped pecans.
  7. Pour the warm frosting evenly over the warm cake immediately after removing it from the oven.
  8. Allow the cake to cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • You can use your favorite homemade chocolate cake recipe instead of a mix.
  • For a richer flavor, toast the pecans lightly before chopping and adding them to the frosting.
  • This cake is best served at room temperature.
