Bake the ultimate holiday apple pie. You will create a dessert with a perfectly flaky crust and a warmly spiced, sweet apple filling. This recipe ensures you produce a showstopper.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour
  • Unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • Ice water
  • Granulated sugar
  • Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Allspice
  • Lemon juice
  • Egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pie crust dough using flour, cold butter, and ice water. Chill thoroughly.
  2. Combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and lemon juice in a large bowl.
  3. Roll out half of the chilled dough and place it into your pie dish.
  4. Fill the bottom crust with the spiced apple mixture.
  5. Roll out the second half of the dough for the top crust. Place it over the filling. Crimp and seal the edges. Cut vents in the top crust.
  6. Brush the top crust with an egg wash.
  7. Bake until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  8. Cool completely before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use very cold butter for the flakiest crust possible.
  • Let the pie cool for several hours; this allows the filling to set properly.
  • Taste your apples; adjust sugar based on their tartness.
  • You can make a lattice top if you prefer a different look.
