It’s a warm, comforting dish that brings together sweet apples and cinnamon-spiced French toast in a unique upside-down presentation. This recipe is ideal for a special weekend brunch or a cozy morning treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 6 slices challah or brioche bread, about 1 inch thick
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter a 9×9 inch baking dish.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the bottom of the buttered baking dish.
  3. Arrange the sliced apples in a single layer over the brown sugar mixture.
  4. Place the bread slices on top of the apples, fitting them as snugly as possible.
  5. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, ensuring all the bread is soaked. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the custard.
  7. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil.
  8. Bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  10. Let the French toast cool in the dish for about 5-10 minutes before inverting onto a serving platter.
  11. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use half-and-half instead of milk.
  • Ensure the bread is slightly stale for best results, as it will absorb the custard without becoming too mushy.
  • Any firm apple variety, like Honeycrisp or Fuji, works well.
