Make a simple, creamy, and fluffy American buttercream frosting that holds its shape perfectly for decorating cakes and cupcakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Place the softened butter in a large mixing bowl. Beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until it is smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until fully incorporated after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and salt. Mix on low speed until combined.
  4. Add 3 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 3 to 5 minutes until the frosting is light, fluffy, and smooth.
  5. If the frosting seems too stiff for piping, add the remaining tablespoon of cream, one teaspoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
  6. Use immediately for frosting cakes or piping decorations.

Notes

  • For a stiffer frosting suitable for detailed piping, use only cold heavy cream or milk sparingly.
  • If your butter is too warm, the frosting will be greasy; ensure it is just soft, not melted.
  • Sift your powdered sugar to prevent lumps in the final frosting texture.
  • To make this frosting chocolate, substitute 1/2 cup of powdered sugar with 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted with the sugar.
