Make simple, cheesy jalapeño poppers baked until golden brown. Control the heat by removing seeds and veins before stuffing with a cream cheese mixture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 large jalapeño peppers
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly coat with cooking spray.
  2. Slice the jalapeños in half lengthwise. Use a small spoon or knife to carefully remove the seeds and white membranes. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Mix until fully combined.
  4. Spoon the cheese mixture evenly into each jalapeño half, mounding it slightly.
  5. In a shallow dish, lightly beat the egg. In another shallow dish, place the panko breadcrumbs.
  6. Dip the top (cheese side) of each stuffed pepper lightly into the egg, then press gently into the breadcrumbs to coat the cheese surface.
  7. Place the poppers, cheese-side up, on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the peppers are tender and the cheese topping is melted and lightly golden.
  9. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Wear gloves when handling jalapeños to prevent skin irritation from the capsaicin.
  • For less heat, remove all white membrane from the inside of the pepper. For more heat, leave some membrane intact.
  • You can substitute bacon bits for half of the breadcrumbs for added flavor.
